Well, to be totally honest I’ve always thought of it as slightly unadvisable as a compiler to corner yourself with a title such as ‘Hip Hop Love Jazz’, so it was with a certain reservation that I slipped Nicci Cheeks latest offering into the CD player. This reservation proved unwarranted, right from the off the beats bounce, skip and grind along with enough awkwardness to avoid any ‘dinner party music’ tags, whilst the occasional sax/Rhodes/guitar lick reminds you of the latter part of the album title. With enough exclusives to keep even those who view a trip to Japan to pick up a jazzy sport 12” justified happy (Cut Chemist, Kev Brown, Kim Hill), Nicci Cheeks could well have earnt herself a place in any discerning music fans collection - file under hip hop/jazz.
