Quite clearly a reference to the state of their mitts after another session in the crates of some second-hand vinyl emporium, Brighton/Yorkshire duo the Dirty Diggers add further fuel to Britain’s flaming hip hop fire, sampling sumptuous old soul, jazz and funk licks, crafting heavyweight beats and tight scratches and spitting the kind of rhymes that should attract the ears of more than just a bunch of hooded lads. That’s not to say Dirty Diggers can quite knock up a beat on a par with the new Kanye West, Pharrell or Jay Dee, but these guys have definitely got something going on. Too many British rappers sound like they’re whining about nothing much at all: the Diggers have actually got something to say, while continuing to sound wholeheartedly British, apparently revelling in their position as underdogs. Freakishly Strong is easily as good as anything the likes of Rodney P or Skinnyman has produced. Those crates may be filthy but these players dig deep.
