If you judge a man by the company he keeps then Mocky fares very well indeed. Feist, Taylor Savvy and Jamie Lidell, the collaborators on Mocky’s new album ‘Navy Brown Blues’ all occupy that no mans land where broadsheets, style magazines and serious music critics elbow each other out of the way to heap praise from afar.
The exciting thing about it all however, is that Mocky is more than just a relatively new arrival with a collection of amusing song titles (‘Mickey Mouse Mother Fuckers’ anyone?) or a trendy remixer (Tiefschwarz). Navy Brown Blues proves he’s got no intention of disappearing from whatever scene people think he’s part of, in fact it could well propel him towards a few more unsuspecting fans. His rapping style may not be to everyone tastes (although lyrically its superior, I can’t help but draw parallels with John Barnes effort on the Italia ’90 track) yet the princesque bass lines, catchy hooks and occasional dance floor bump lends this the kind of draw which gained Jamie Lidell so many new fans not too long ago with his stomping long player, Mulitply.
