Mr Lif’s stock has been constantly on the rise since establishing himself as one of the most ambitious and forward thinking mcs in the game with the breakout ‘enters the colossus’ ep (Def Jux 2000). In the time that has followed Lif has been profiled by MTV, Rolling Stone and The NY Times. It seems however that Lif’s brief flirtation with America’s mainstream media outlets has had little or no effect on the attributes that propelled him into the spotlight in the first place. On the hotly anticipated new long player ‘Mo Mega’ Lif’s lyrical content is unapologetically personal and political, a style which when layed over label head honcho El-P’s beats makes a lot of sense – It’s a catalytic hardhitting soundscape. You don’t have to look far to find Lif’s inspiration, from the water logged streets of New Orleans to the killing fields of Sudan, this is an album with a message – there’s a riot going on, Consider this its soundtrack.
