There’s been a lot of fanfare about the return of Dr Octagon, the man also known as Kool Keith most famous for his role in seminal Eighties hip hop outfit Ultramagnetic MCs. Someone even posted an excited message on the forum, asking whether we’d managed to get our mitts on it yet. Well, we have now and, to be honest, it’s a bit of a disappointment. However, this hasn’t been a massive surprise. Having missed his appearance at the Bongo Club during the Tritptych festival this year, all the reports afterwards suggested that he didn’t live up to all the hype (do the hip hop legends EVER live up to all their hype?). Don’t get me wrong, there is SOME good material here, and it’s clear Keith hasn’t lost his sense of humour or his bizarre (and often ingenious) lyrical style. But, while boasting a refreshingly uptempo pace compared to the psychedelic, downbeat style of his groundbreaking album for Mo Wax, the return of Dr Octagon often leaves this fan a bit cold.
