My opinion of this ranges from absolute hatred, pleasant surprise then beautiful adoration. The emotion oscillates between the extremes about twice over the course of the album.
I hate the opening track The 1970s, grin to the fun of Bobby Fame and rapturously enjoy the fusion of Modern Sleep Over. I move through the album with a torn heart, other highlights including Please Please Please Me and Garden Of Dance. These wannabes emulate the sound of their idols quite convincingly, they have the benefit of hindsight which gives their perspective on the golden era of dad-jazz-rock a funny twist.
The main beef is with the occasional cringe-worthy rhyming couplets. But perhaps these are where Talc consider their strengths lie? In a 'so bad its good' kind of way perhaps. I'm not sure. The lyrics never really hit the sophistication of Fagen and Becker's, I just can't work out if that is because I am not quite in touch with their humor enough to understand if this is a complete tongue-in-cheek concept album or we are meant too regard some of it seriously.
Music is about bringing a smile to the faces of the audience and here they have achieved that. It also makes me grind my teeth and tug on my hair which isn't as much fun. It hurts just a little bit.
