Bit of a belated write-up this. Have to admit that, while I’ve been a fan of Simon Green, alias Bonobo, since his first releases slipped out on Tru Thoughts some four years ago and the initial sampler for his new album did have me hooked again, there was a certain amount of dozing going on when the full LP arrived. But what a gem it is, unsurprisingly winning the Album Of The Year gong at GP’s Radio 1 Worldwide Music Awards in January. Green’s signature dreamy style is present and correct, but, now including a full live band, he can explore a whole new realm of voodoo jazz, which, with the inimitable Bajka from our old German pals the Poets Of Rhythm on board, definitely works a treat. There is also a guest appearance by Fink (also on vox), whose recent long-player of acoustic song-writing came as quite a surprise after all his sample-based, instrumental stuff. It’s refreshing to hear so many artists going beyond the electronic domain to harness all the other riches available and find a new voice, without necessarily losing track of what excited them about working with computers in the first place. Days To Come does this in spades.
