Considering its slightly pedestrian opening tracks, this album leaves you with a happy glow if you see it though to its conclusion.
The opening sequences see Mark Barnott’s latest Future Loop Foundation album draw inspiration from the sea of music often described as folk-tronica. It just sounds like a cliche. The whales farting along with the rambling vocal snippets (taken from recordings of the composers childhood) don’t float my boat. This indulgent style of music is destined for European ‘lounge’ compilations and I hope that’s where it stays.
Thankfully things start to change and the second half of the album is a whole different story. By track 6 they’ve hit a high, their Homegrown Dynamic track sounding like Global Communication, Boards of Canada or some other accomplished circa-1994 ambient producers. As we enter the final 4 tracks this hits a new level. Some brilliant soaring chords, lush melodies, loose break beats and plinky-plonky pianos result in a quirky yet very pleasing closure.
