Bristol boy Ben Westbeech is the singer-songwriter who launched Gilles Peterson’s new Brownswood label last year with his club smash So Good Today. In a musical climate saturated by identikit kids throwing dodgy dance shapes they nicked off their older brothers and sisters and then embellished with angular guitar sonics recycled ad nauseam, he’s nothing less than a breath of fresh air. Classically trained and raised on a diet of rock ‘n’ roll, but passionate about hip hop, soul, jazz and drum ‘n’ bass, Westbeech brings all these ingredients into the mix and then adds his own individual take on the world around him. And it’s a compelling take, too, with songs such as album opener Welcome…, last year’s club smashes, So Good Today, and Get Closer demonstrate prowess in the lyrical department, while sonically exploring all the aforementioned genres.
