The Quantic Soul Orchestra is the live funk side project of multi-talented Will Holland. The concept is simple; his own website explains: ‘to present to the listener a sample free, live, raw funk sound with a nod to breakbeat and sample culture’. From the title of their second album, one might be fooled into believing Holland has come to a crossroads in his production career, boldly deciding to steer away from concocting records fit to get the low slung trouser demographic pogoing like their life depended on it, in favour of rattling nails around in a crisp packet hoping to create a new dimension in sound recording. This worry is erased the moment the needle hits the record. The opening track, ‘Introducing’, being a frenetic paced jam featuring equal parts gang buster guitar riffing and body rocking breakbeats all aided and abetted by some healthy stabs from the horn section. ‘Feeling Good’ (a cover of the Nina Simone classic) provides a welcome change of tack. With its soft brass lines and gorgeous strings; giving each instrument the breathing space it requires and allowing for give and take between members of the band, Holland creates the perfect backdrop for Alice Russell’s soaring vocals. Whilst their cover of 4 Hero’s neo-soul bomb ‘Hold It Down’ provided much dance floor mayhem on the previous album, it seems the overhaul of Mr Scruff’s anthemic ‘Keep On Movin’, complete with fairground style organs could encourage similar scenes of carnage this time around. Although short (clocking in at just under 40 mins),’Pushin On’ achieves everything it set out to and no doubt will bring more than a few smiles to the faces of the festival masses as this hard working funk outfit hit the road for the summer months. Whilst the majority of listeners will not class it as a milestone, this album deserves your attention and is a commendable effort for a 25 year old with 5 studio albums under his belt.
